Do The Cards Have The Front-Court To Win It All?

A few weeks ago we learned that Zach Price would be leaving the Cardinals Basketball program. And while there still seems to be plenty of depth in the front court should we be concerned about not having enough bangers inside to make another title run?

Most publications have our Cardinals ranked 2nd or 3rd in their pre-season polls. When looking into their evaluations and reasoning behind them not putting the Cards in that top spot it’s usually the same thing. They think without Dieng’s shot-blocking or rebounding chops, the Cardinals might be a bit vulnerable defending the interior. Most of the talking heads seem to think Louisville could benefit from another player whose sole job is to hit the glass with abandon; as they struggled throughout the 2012-13 season keeping teams off the offensive glass.

One guy in particular that seems to think the Cardinals don’t have much of a shot at winning the title in 2013-14 is Michael DeCourcy of The Sporting News. He has the Cards ranked 3rd in his pre-season outlook and had Zach Price as a guy who would be a major role player for the Cards next season. Now that Price is gone DeCourcy doesn’t think they should even be ranked that high. In a recent online conversation with DeCourcy he states “If you’re playing 6-5/6-8 at center, you will not do better than No. 3. I’m sure of that.” and points out to me in the conversation that “there are certain realities about what wins at the Final Four level. And there hasn’t been a champ without at least a 6-9 starter in decades.” In closing the conversation with Mike I sent a shot his way telling him good job predicting Price to be a role player. He replied “so much for your prediction about them finishing higher than 3 with current roster.”

I personally don’t think that we will have any issues with the guys we have holding down the paint area. In my defense of that I pointed out how Montrezl Harrell took over against Syracuse in the Big East Title game and how Chane Behanan took over the paint area during the Championship game. Both of these instances came against big, athletic and tall front-courts.
Coach Pitino did hint last week that the coaching staff might be out beating the bush in an attempt to sign a late add for the 2013-14 season. So if they do add a player will it be a front-court player to replace Zach Price? And is there a player still out there that could be a potential target?

One player that Cardinal fans should keep an eye on this summer and a guy I think would be a great addition to the team is Nkosi Ali. Ali is the best remaining junior college front-court player in the country. Nkosi Ali, is a 6-11 forward out of NE Oklahoma A & M. Richard Pitino has been courting the big man in recent weeks and Ali was supposed to take a visit to Minnesota on Memorial Day weekend but didn’t make it. Per JucoRecruiting.com Ali is an agile forward who can run the floor and finish in transition. He is a good shot blocker when rotating from the weak side and rebounds the ball well. He averaged 10.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and nearly 2 blocks per game this season while shooting 55% from the field. Ali, who is originally from Atlanta, spent his freshman year of college at Highline CC in Washington. At Highline he averaged 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 55% from the field.

Here’s some early tape on Nkosi:

The Louisville Cardinals can see the College World Series from here. Yesterday Louisville overcame a 2-1 deficit with three runs in the seventh to hold on for a 5-3 win against the No. 2 national seed. Zak Wasserman drove home Jeff Gardner for each of Louisville’s first two runs of the game, including the game-tying RBI single in the seventh. Vandy closer Brian Miller took over for Ziomek with the bases loaded, and pinch-hitter Matt Helms greeted Miller by hitting a two-run RBI single through the left side, putting the Cardinals ahead for good.

The win yesterday puts the Cardinals in the drivers seat. Teams that win the first game of the Super Regional have over a 70% chance of moving on to Omaha. A win today will give Louisville their second trip to a College World Series. Louisville last reached the CWS back in 2007 after getting an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Also a win today would give the Cardinals 51 victories on the year breaking the previous win record of 50 wins in 2010.

Today could be a very special one for this baseball team as they are looking to make their mark on the Louisville program. Be sure to tune into ESPN at 4:00PM today and cheer on the Cards.

This weekend the Cardinals baseball team will be playing a three game series in the Super Regionals against the Vanderbilt Commodores. The winner of this series will punch their ticket to Omaha and join seven other teams in the College World Series.
This is the 3rd Super Regional in the last 7 seasons for the Cards. They beat Oklahoma St in 2007 to advance to the College World Series and lost to Cal State Fullerton in 2009.

I don’t think many folks are giving our Cardinals much of a chance this weekend in Nashville but I think they have the team to pull off the upset. The Cardinals have great starting pitching and a bullpen that has been compared to a double A ball club. The Cardinals collectively have a great defensive team as well so if they manage to get a lead on this Vandy team their chances improve a lot.

This Vandy team is being described by many as one of their best ever. They are a veteran team with very skilled and athletic players at every position. They also have a very good group on the mound and in the bullpen. They play very confident baseball especially at home and it will be a tall task to deny this group a chance to play in the College World Series.

Our Cards will have their hands full this weekend and perhaps may need a little something extra if they are to pull off this major upset. They just might get that extra something from the new cutting edge uniforms unveiled today. The Cardinals will wear their new unis on Sunday. Just like with the basketball uniforms these new baseball Uniforms from Adidas are pretty outrageous. But if they yield the same results then I’m all for it. Plus I really like the new uniforms because they take me back to my early childhood. The new uniforms look like the ones the Houston Astros wore in the mid 70’s. And it makes me think of the times I went to Riverfront Stadium when they played the Reds there.

It’s going to be an exciting weekend of baseball so be sure to tune in and cheer on your Cardinals to victory. Would be great to get back to the College World Series and would go along way at helping us move up higher in the Capital One Cup standings.

Here are the TV times for this weekend.

-Louisville (49-12) at No. 2 Vanderbilt (54-10)

Sunday: 4 p.m. (ESPN)

The Cardinal Caravan Curtain Call

I’ve logged many miles and traveled to several stops this week during the University of Louisville’s Cardinal Caravan. I have enjoyed this week getting to meet great Cardinal fans and celebrating the success of the sports programs with them. It was also great hearing from the student-athletes and coaches. I along with many of you get the hunger for some Cardinal sports this time of year and the Caravan is always great to get me through until football season starts. The turnout for the Caravan’s this year were some of the best I’ve seen since I started attending them several years ago. I think that is a real testament to how loyal our fan base really is.

Tonight the Cardinal Caravan had its curtain call at the fairgrounds in Shelby County. It’s always one of the best stops, and the very first Caravan I ever attended was in Shelby County. Hundreds of fans were packed in the pavilion to hear from the Athletic Department and they were in for a real treat tonight as Coach Strong made a rare appearance to the Caravan. He was on fire tonight as he broke down the season ahead and talked about some of the players on the team. The night was capped off by Chane Behanan and Russ Smith taking the stage. The crowd roared when these guys stood up. And fans mobbed them for autographs when that part of the Caravan commenced. That has to be overwhelming to them especially after having a gruesome workout today. Cardinal Fans also had a chance to hear from the new assistant coach tonight Mike Balado.

So lots of great stuff tonight and you can watch all of the videos and see some photos below from tonight’s final Cardinal Caravan of this year. I know I had a good time as always and I’m glad I got to bring the action to those of you who were unable to make it out. Go Cards!

A Cardinal Caravan In Rupp Arena’s Back Yard

Wednesday night the Cardinal Caravan took over Lexington Kentucky, yes that is right I said Lexington. I never thought I would see the day when the Caravan would make the trip into the heart of wildcat country but tonight that happened. What really made this trip crazy is the fact that the Caravan was held in the back yard of Rupp Arena. It was a great site to see that old building standing in the background of the giant blow-up Cardinal Head.

It was a good turnout for the Lexington Caravan and there seems to be a few very passionate Louisville fans in the area. One person who stood out the most was Michael Coleman. Michael a Cardinal fan since 1975 says he has lived in Lexington all of his life and that he loves his Cardinals. Most fans claim to be die hard, but this guy has the car to back up his claims. Michael has his classic Lincoln adorned in Cardinal Red inside and out. He says that he does not have a favorite player and that he likes them all. I work in the Lexington area and have seen this car out in town but it was great to finally get to meet the owner. Michael says that he has never got the chance to attend a game in person but would like to some day. There were some of the UofL social media staff talking with him and I think they are going to make sure he gets that chance this season. It is awesome to see this type of dedication and passion from a fan and especially one in Lexington.

Below are some photos and video of the Cardinal Caravan tonight in Lexington. One of the videos features Michael Coleman the Lexington Super fan explaining the details of his car.

We still have our baseball team fighting in the NCAA Tourney, but it’s around this time every year when Cardinal Fans start to get that itch. We are missing basketball and anxiously waiting for the Football season to begin. Its always great when the Cardinal Caravan starts making its tour at the beginning of the summer. It quenches our thirst for some sports news and we get a chance to get up close and personal with the athletic programs we cheer for throughout the year. Tonight the Caravan made its annual stop at the Captain’s Quarters and it did not disappoint. The Cardinal’s Beak was in attendance tonight and below are some photos and video from the event.

When you are a Cardinal fan there is no such thing as time off. And there are no slow news days. Today is especially not a slow one. Today Coach Pitino had a press conference to talk about his Makers Mark bottle being released this Friday the 7th. But like any press conference other topics were discussed.

The Makers Mark bottles will be on store shelves starting Friday and there will be a bottle signing that will happen on June 13th at 5:00pm in the KFC Yum Center. Tickets will go on sale for that signing on the 10th and will cost 1 dollar. Here are some of Coach Pitino’s comments about Makers Mark:

Coach Pitino on being on Maker’s bottle: “it has happened before……in a different color.”

Coach Pitino: “we couldn’t do what we are doing for our student athletes without sponsors like maker’s mark.”

Anyone who hasn’t been under a rock over the past couple of weeks are very familiar with the controversy surrounding comments made by the Ohio State President Gordon Gee. Coach Pitino made headlines last week when he shared some very choice words for Mr Gee. Today Coach Pitino had some other things to share about this controversy:

Coach Pitino: “Gordon Gee has agreed to a gift of $500,000 for the academic center (jokingly).”

Coach Pitino on Gee’s apology being genuine: “No, he did it because the board of directors made him.”

Coach Pitino on Gee: “it is a pompous attitude.”

Coach Pitino: “it is low self esteem, jealously, we’ll need a psychologist to determine.”

During the press conference Coach Pitino updated everyone on some of the players and talked about the success of the athletic program. It sounds like Kevin is making great progress, all the incoming guys are on schedule, Russ playing ball in Spain, NBA GMs are amazed at genuine attitude of Gorgui/Peyton and one of the big shockers of the day Zach Price is moving on. Here are some of the comments from Coach:

Coach Pitino: “we are 3rd in the Capital Cup with half of the sports.”

Coach Pitino: “it is unusual to see so much success in a single year.”

Coach Pitino: “Kevin is shooting jump shots.”

Coach Pitino: “Kevin is just off crutches two weeks ago.”

Coach Pitino: “everyone is on campus but Rozier and Hancock. Rozier will be here soon.”

Coach Pitino: “I don’t like my guys playing pick-up basketball.”

Coach Pitino: “Russ may go to Spain to play on a touring team.”

Coach Pitino: “Rozier will be here this week.”

Coach Pitino on Zach Price: “I’d say he is gone, because our players don’t tweet.”

Coach Pitino on Gorgui and Peyton: “GMs ask me if this is fake, are these guys this nice?”

Coach Pitino closed it out today by talking about some of his activities during the break. He mentioned his fishing trip and talked about his horse not winning the Derby and hanging out with Pitt Bull.

Coach Pitino on his fishing trip: “it was great fun, but the chances of me going again are remote. Kenny couldn’t catch the big fish.”

Coach Pitino on Goldencents: “I am a bad loser, since didn’t win the derby haven’t paid attention. been hanging out with Pitbull on the west coast.”

Coach Pitino will be making an appearance at the Cardinal Caravan tonight at Captain’s Quarters in Louisville at 6:30pm. The Caravan started today and will be making stops around the Bluegrass area over the next 3 days. Below is a schedule of the stops. The Cardinal’s Beak will be at a few of these stops along the way and I will have video and photos from the event.

Football News:

Just as the Pitino press conference came to an end twitter started to buzz about the news of Louisville Football’s 2014 schedule. We learned today that the Cards will be playing Notre Dame, Florida State, Miami, Clemson, NC State, Kentucky, BC, Virginia, among others in 2014. It’s going to be tough during this transition year but great things await for the football team and the fans in the future. Below is the crossover schedule of future ACC football opponents:

FOOTBALL TEAM GETS THE BLING

We’ve seen a lot of teams show off their championship rings in the past couple of weeks, but perhaps one of the teams that deserves to boast about its accomplishments in jewelry form the most has finally released its cubic zirconia-laden masterpieces. Today the University Louisville football team received their Big East and Sugar Bowl Championship rings.

Last year’s spark plug back-up QB Will Stein was the first to tweet out a picture of the Cardinal’s simple yet very shiny new bling. The Big East ring features the Louisville Old English “L” inside a football on top, while the Sugar Bowl ring features the Allstate Sugar Bowl logo.

The football team will look very good sporting their new rings and this will give them a little extra time of celebration before the work starts again here in a few months. Let’s hope this time next year the Football team is getting a few more rings.

CARDS MARCH TO SUPER REGIONALS

It was a great weekend of baseball in Louisville at Jim Patterson Stadium. Thousands of Cardinal fans were in attendance to watch the Cards baseball team win three games straight and advance to the Super Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

On Friday Louisville cruised to an 8-3 win against Bowling Green. Coco Johnson (3-for-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 HR) and Jeff Gardner (3-for-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B, 3B) led Louisville’s 10-hit attack in support of Chad Green (7 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). Then on Saturday Miami’s Bryan Radziewski kept Louisville off the board until the seventh, when the Cardinals rallied for six runs, capped by Jeff Ratajczak’s three-run double. Jeff Thompson (6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) was strong in a no-decision for Louisville, which held off Miami’s comeback bid in the eighth.

The Cards topped off their great regional run on Sunday getting their 49th win of the season eliminating Oklahoma State. The Cards got their offense going today as they scored 12 runs off of 12 hits. The Cards are now on their way to Nashville to face Vandy in the Super Regional which is the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Baseball Tourney and are two wins away from the College World Series. This is the 3rd Super Regional in the last 7 seasons for the Cards. They beat Oklahoma St in 2007 to advance to the College World Series and lost to Cal State Fullerton in 2009.

I don’t know how next weekend will go for this team as they will face a very strong Vandy team, but one thing that I’m sure of is that the University of Louisville program has cemented itself as a national power in the world of college baseball.
