Our Cards held off a pesky Irish group and get the win 69-57 to advance back to the Championship game of the Big East tournament for the fourth time in five years and for the third year straight. It will be the last time that these teams will face each other as members of the Big East but this rivalry will go on as both teams move into the ACC. Notre Dame will move there this year and Louisville the next. Louisville now leads the all-time series with Notre Dame 19 to 12 and finish leading the Big East series 6 to 5. They also faced this Irish team 3 times in the Big East tourney and won them all.

Tonight was just one of those games where the win was very blue collar. There wasn’t many stunning plays and there wasn’t much dazzle. The guys just grinded it out with a team that wanted to slow it down and make it ugly. Ugly like their horrible green uniforms. The defense was solid again tonight and did a great job at not letting the Notre Dame sharp shooters have any clean looks and they did a great job at keeping their big guys away from the basket. The offense struggled at times especially in the half court sets. It’s good that the Cards have seen a match-up like this because they will see a team like this in the NCAA tourney that will take care of the ball and refuse to let our guys speed them up. In these games where teams get Louisville in the half-court battle our front-court is going to have to step up and do a better job. These are games where Gorgui, Chane and Wayne are going to have to show up. Offensive rebounding is also very important in games like this and tonight the Cards had a lot of one and done possessions. Good effort tonight but not great. This one could be best described by the old tourney cliche “survive and advance.”

Three players really deserve to be named the players of the game in this one. Russ, Peyton and Luke really carried their team tonight and all of them came through with some clutch plays when their team needed them.

Russ Smith is playing on a different level now and you can see the intensity in his eyes. He scored 20 points tonight but also had 6 very good assist. I’ve said it all year that when he scores and shares the ball he is really special. And so far in the post season he is really special.

In my opinion Peyton Siva is one more great game from winning the most outstanding player award in the Big East tournament for the second consecutive year. Tonight he had 12 points, 6 assist and 7 steals. He broke Ray Allen’s record for most steals in a league game and is now the all-time steals leader at the University of Louisville passing the great Darrell Griffith for that honor. What a leader he is for this program and this team. Looking forward to what he has in store for tomorrow night.

I mentioned weeks ago that Luke Hancock was a big X-factor for this team and their national title hopes. And he has made me look like I know what I’m talking about. This guy hits big time shots in big time situations. Tonight he went 3 for 3 from behind the arc and scored 11 points. All of those shots came at times when the offense needed them the most. Luke is the man!

Front-court was non-existent in this one and its a good thing they took the night off because tomorrow night they are going to be needed.

Honorable mention to Stephan Van Treese. This guy is a work horse and goes after rebounds with ruthless aggression. Tonight he had 5 but it seemed like he had 20. He is always around the ball when it comes off that glass. I love the guy.

I was glad when this one was over. Notre Dame is like a rock in your shoe. They just wear on you after watching them for very long. My dislike for them and their players has reached UK levels. It’s going to be nice getting a break from playing them for a year in my opinion. After winning nine straight and this win tonight I finally got that bad taste out of my mouth from that 5 overtime debacle. Good to send the green packing. Now on to the Big East title game to defend our championship and send this conference out Cardinal Style.

Cards Will Face Irish in 3rd Straight Big East Semi-Final

The Cards will face the Notre Dame fighting Irish for the third straight season in the Big East semi-finals. The Cards are 2-0 against the Irish in the Big East tournament. Louisville leads the all-time series with Notre Dame 18 to 12 and the teams are tied in regular season games 5 to 5. This will also be the third time these teams have faced off this season. Notre Dame won the first contest on February 9th in 5 overtimes 104-101. Louisville won the second contest on March 9th 73-57.

Notre Dame is trying to win four games in four days to be the Big East champion. They have already locked themselves a spot in the NCAA tournament but are now looking to cap off their season with a Big East title. Notre Dame might be a little less talented than some Big East teams, but its experienced roster and efficient offense is enough to win big games and be very competitive. Notre Dame returns all five starters for one of the few times in Mike Brey’s 12-year tenure and one of the most talented recruiting classes. Notre Dame’s current senior class needs only one victory to become the program’s all-time winningest class. There is depth, there is talent, there is plenty of drive and plenty of determination. When it comes to taking care of the ball and sharing the ball there isn’t many teams that do it better than this Irish squad. And they can score from anywhere on the floor.

Notre Dame’s Season averages on defense: Forced TO’s- 9.9, Steals- 4.6, Blocks- 3.3

Projected Starting Line-up for the Fighting Irish:

F Jack Cooley: He was named to the All Big East First team and has become a force down low for the Irish. He has 8 points and 15 rebounds in their two Big East tourney wins.

F Tom Knight: The left-hander can do a handful of tasks really well rebound, defend and screen. He has become a more consist player this season as well. He has 26 points and 13 rebounds in their two Big East tourney wins.

G Eric Atkins: He is one of the top guards in the league and does a good job at guiding this offense. He takes good care of the ball and finds the open man. He has 15 points and 7 assist in their two Big East tourney wins.

G Jerian Grant: He was named to the All Big East second team. He is a really confident player that will hit big shots in key moments, and knows how to get the ball to his teammates in scoring position. He has 28 points, 11 assist and 10 rebounds in their two Big East tourney wins.

G/F Pat Connaughton: Is a player with a lot of versatility. He’ll score, pass, guard, take a charge and rebound. He also understands what it’s like to be under the brightest of lights. He’s having a outstanding Big East tournament showing with 39 points and 9 rebounds in their two tourney wins.

Projected Bench Players:

C Garrick Sherman: Is a transfer from Michigan State that will provide back up to Cooley. He performs well against Louisville. He has 20 points and 10 rebounds in their two Big East tourney wins.

F Cameron Biedscheid: He hit the winning lay up to beat the Cards earlier this season but didn’t play against us a few weeks ago due to suspension. He is solid off the bench and has scored 4 points with 2 rebounds in their tourney wins.

F Zach Auguste: Is a freshman that has come in and played the part for Notre Dame like Harrell has played for Louisville. He gives them length and a Big East body. He comes off the bench and gives them solid minutes. He had 2 points and 2 rebounds in their tourney wins.

I wouldn’t want to be any team playing a third game in three days and have to face this Cards defense. Plus the Irish have been in two pretty close games as well. I do think they will make a good game of it for the first 25 or so minutes but then their legs will start to wear causing those jump shots to fall short. The key to this game for the Cards is to replicate the great defensive effort of the Villanova game. Got to extend the D and get out on these Irish shooters. Gorgui took the night off against Nova so he should be ready to have another monster game against the Irish. Similar to what he did against them on senior day. Russ and Peyton are in a zone and they should dominate the back-court battle. We will have fresher legs and more talent on the floor. This game should just be a warm-up game for the finals for the Cardinals. I don’t see this one being much of problem and am looking forward to sending the Irish home from New York. I might finally get over that 5OT deal after that.

Louisville is now 7-1 in their last 8 Big East Tournament games and have won their last five straight. That is tied for fifth longest streak in conference history. The Cards completely overwhelmed Villanova tonight for the 74-55 win and will be heading to the semi-final round for the fourth time in the last five years.

The guys started out a little tight tonight but once they settled in and got adjusted to the bright lights of MSG they were ready to take care of business. The Cardinal’s defense was just incredible tonight and they had Villanova turning the ball over like they were playing against ten defenders. The Cards forced Nova into 25 turnovers, had 12 steals and we learned from coach Pitino after the game that they had 58 deflections. Rick said that’s the most by any team he’s ever coached college or NBA.

I thought they looked really good on the offensive end of the floor tonight and had some decent scoring stretches. Coach Pitino had said earlier this season the he missed his team not being able to hit the three point shot more effectively. Pitino said it was like “losing an old friend.” Well tonight that old friend made a surprise visit as the Cards were 10 of 24 from the three-point line for 41.7%. They also shot a pretty good clip from the field and were 23 of 52 for 44.2%. And very solid from the free-throw line at 18 of 23 for 79.3%. This was a very business like attitude win for this team. They seemed very focused on the task at hand.

The player of the game tonight was New York’s native son Russ Smith. Russ was playing inspired basketball tonight and with a heavy heart as he learned earlier this morning that his former coach from Malloy high school had passed away. Russ and coach Pitino said that they would dedicate the rest of this season to coach Curran. Coach Curran would have been very proud of Russ’s performance tonight. He had a very impressive stat line as he tied former Card Edgar Sosa for the most points by a Cardinal in a Big East tourney game with 28 points.

Peyton Siva has scored in double figures in seven straight Big East tournament games and seems to take his play to another level when he plays at the Garden. He had 10 points, 4 assist and 3 steals. He needs just one more steal to be tied for all-time steals leader with Darrell Griffith. And needs just two more to be the all-time steals leader for Louisville. I think we’ll have a new all-time steal leader after this tourney is over.

The rest of the starters had workmen like performances and nothing you would call spectacular but they did their jobs and were very effective tonight. Would like to see more out of Gorgui as I think he was too quiet in the first half. And Chane is a NCAA tournament performer. That’s when we see him turn it up a notch. Wayne? I guess we’ll see him turn it up in the Final Four.

We got great minutes out of our bench again tonight with 17 points out of Ware, Hancock and Harrell. Stephan Van Treese had 8 rebounds. Bench performance is one if the most important things in the post season. These guys are getting it done.

We have now revenged 3 of our earlier season losses in this 8 game winning streak. The Cards are as focused as I’ve seen them and now await the winner of the Marquette vs Notre Dame game. Eight games down and eight to go for this season to be complete.

Cards & Cats in Big East Tourney Quarterfinals

CardinalNation now knows who the first opponent of the post season will be as Villanova knocked off St Johns on Wednesday night. They will now meet our Louisville Cardinals in the Quarterfinals of the Big East tournament on Thursday night. The all-time series between these teams is tied at 9 to 9 and Nova leads the Big East regular season series 6 to 3. These teams have faced each other one time in the Big East tournament and Louisville won that game 69-55. The Cards played Nova back on January 22 and lost that game 73-64.

Jay Wright is terrific and has been that for Villanova, which is why the Wildcats’ drop in the early season was a little surprising. They did bounce back after those early season losses to Columbia and La Salle to have a solid Big East season. The Wildcats have won three games against top five ranked teams this season, all at home though. The Wildcats knocked off Syracuse, Louisville and Georgetown and are a lock to be invited to the tournament with an at large berth. Now after their solid win against St Johns in the first game of the Big East tourney they have proven that they are a team to be reckoned with.

Villanova’s Season averages on defense: Forced TO’s- 14.3, Steals- 7.4, Blocks- 3.3

Projected Starting Lineup for the Wildcats:

F Mouptaou Yarou: He was the top performer of the game against St Johns scoring 18 points with 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 blocked shot. He is their most experienced player and is playing like it.

F JayVaughn Pinkston: He was named to the All Big East third team for the season and has started to play very well for the Wildcats. He had 12 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist and 1 blocked shot against St Johns.

G Darrun Hillard: He is a good defender and a solid ball handler. He had 4 points, 4 assist and 2 steals against St Johns.

G Ryan Arcidiacono: He was named to the Big East All Rookie team. He is a very good shooter and can really get hot from behind the arc. He had 15 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assist and 1 steal against St Johns.

G James Bell: He shows flashes of being a good scorer and defender. He had 7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assist and 2 steals against St Johns.

Projected Bench Players:

G Tony Chennault: He is a Wake Forrest transfer and is a very solid bench player for the Wildcats. He provides leadership when on the floor. He had 8 points, 3 rebound, 2 assist and 1 steal against St Johns.

F Daniel Ochefu: He is known for his shot blocking and his rebounding. He had 2 points and 2 rebounds against St Johns.

The Cards are 2-0 this season in revenge games and will now get the opportunity to get some revenge on the Wildcats and send them packing from the Big East tourney. The Cardinals played well enough to beat them during their regular season match-up but poor free-throw shooting down the stretch in that game cost them. The Cardinals are a different team than they were back in January and are now firing on all cylinders. With Gorgui now playing his best basketball of the season he should dominate the middle in this one, and look for Peyton Siva and Russ Smith to be ready to take over the back-court battle. And as good as our bench has been this will also be a big advantage. Hancock, Ware and Harrell will be very important in this game. I don’t think this one will ever be in question.

A DAD CHEERING FOR HIS SON

Uploaded from the Photobucket

iPhone App

As I was watching Rick Pitino cheer for his son tonight it was very moving. You could see that even after all he has been through he is still a father that just wants the best for his son. Rick Pitino fan or not that is something that every father can cheer for.

Earlier this season we watched Rick Pitino and his son Richard Pitino compete against each other for the very first time ever on the hard wood. That day coach Pitino would get the decisive victory over his son but it was very apparent that the younger Pitino had many of his fathers coaching traits and had the FIU team heading in the right direction. That was a very special day for the Pitino family and a real treat for the fans to share in that moment. On Sunday, Richard Pitino would pull off a big win against No. 1 seeded Middle Tennessee State in the Sun Belt semi-finals and would get his team to the finals on Monday night against WKU. And even though this is the busiest time of the year for the elder Pitino as he is preparing our Cards for a run of their own in the post season there was no way he was going to miss out on being there in person to cheer for his son.

Tonight when the camera would pan in the crowd to acknowledge Rick Pitino’s presence at the game you could see the pride in his eyes as he watched his son carry on his coaching legacy. Here is his son who grew up watching game tapes on his father’s knee, standing on the sidelines while his father ran practices, listening to the late-night strategy sessions and coaching beside his father for years as an assistant now starring in his own moment. Rick Pitino has become a larger than life persona in his coaching career and here in a few weeks he will become a hall of fame coach. However, tonight he was not coach Rick Pitino. Tonight he was just a proud father watching and wanting the best for his son.

Coach Richard Pitino and his FIU team would come up short in the Sun Belt title game against WKU 65-63 but after watching the improvements to this program in just a year there is no question that the future is bright for the young Pitino. And there is no question that here is a son following directly in his father’s footsteps. Last Thursday Richard Pitino was named one of 10 finalists for the Joe B. Hall Award by CollegeInsider.com, presented to its top first-year Division I men’s basketball head coach. The winner will be announced April 5 at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet. Three days later on April 8, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame will announce their Class of 2013 at a press conference in Atlanta prior to the NCAA’s Men’s Championship game. That announcement will include Rick Pitino. This is very symbolic of the circle of life as one Pitino’s coaching career heads into the twilight and the other one is just beginning. The Pitino name has been a part of college basketball most of my life and it looks like that will continue as my son grows up watching the game.

RUSS AND GORGUI RECEIVE POST SEASON ACCOLADES

The 2012-13 regular season is over and the Gorgui Dieng and Russ Smith accolades continue to roll in. Today the Big East named Gorgui the Big East defensive Player of the Year and Sporting News named Russ to their third team All-American list.

Just three years ago, Gorgui arrived as a beanpole with minimal skills and no grasp of the English language. Last year, his shot-blocking and rebounding helped Louisville to the Final Four, and this season he has once again been a great presence in the lane for the Cards. He has helped lead them to a share of the Big East title and is a big reason why the Cards are considered by many the best defensive team in the country. Today he was named the Big East Player of the Year and will now lead the Cards into the post season. Here’s what they said over at Big East .org: “Dieng, a 6-11 center from Kebemer, Senegal, was the force in the paint who helped Louisville tie for the BIG EAST regular-season title. Dieng, a 6-11 junior, averaged 10.3 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots in all games. In BIG EAST play, he was the league rebounding champion with a 10.8 average and was second in blocked shots with an average of 2.8.”

Russ Smith was named a third team All-American by The Sporting News today. Smith is one of two players from the Big East selected for the teams, as Georgetown’s Otto Porter was named to the first team. Here’s what the Sporting News said: “The energetic one averaged 17.9 points per game for the Cardinals while remaining one of the peskiest defenders in the country (2.1 steals per game). The 6-foot sophomore guard, who sits atop the kenpom.com player of the year standings, cut back on the amount of plays that made Louisville fans want to pull their hair out—he didn’t eliminate them, mind you—and has been a consistent producer for one of the country’s elite teams.”

Smith led the Cards in scoring with 17.9 points per game and scored double digits in all but three games this season. He had 92 assist, 64 steals and 114 rebounds averaging 29.8 minutes a game. He shot 40% from the field, 31.7% from three and 82.6% from the free throw line for the season. He recorded a steal in 25 games this season. The lightning quick guard played a pivotal role in the Cards success this season, starting 30 of Louisville’s 31 games.

These guys deserve all the kudos in the world and they both are a big reason this team is doing so well right now. Each have adjusted to their roles and will be a big part of this teams success going forward into March Madness.

GAME #31 BEAK BREAKDOWN “The Fighting Irish”

Our #8 ranked Louisville Cardinals(25-5, 13-4 Big East) have won 6 straight since that dreadful five overtime loss on February 9th to Notre Dame(23-7, 11-6 Big East). Now here we are a month later and the #24 ranked Fighting Irish are coming to the KFC Yum Center for the return game. This will be the last game of the regular season and there will be a lot at stake. So much that Coach Pitino said today in his pre-game press conference that “it is the most important home game we’ve ever played” at the Yum Center. Of course there is the revenge factor of this game but that is really overshadowed by the post season implications. The Cards are currently in a three way tie with Georgetown and Marquette for the Big East regular season title and a win on Saturday would assure them at least a share of it. A win could also be the difference in being the 1 or 2 seed in the Big East tournament. The Cards also have a legitimate shot at getting a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and a big win over a top 50 RPI team in front of a national audience could go a long way in reaching that top line. If that’s not enough to get you fired up add in the Senior Day ceremonies where Mike Marra, Peyton Siva and Gorgui Dieng will play their final home game in the Cardinal uniform. So yes Cardinal fans this game is as big as it gets in the regular season. Louisville leads the all-time series with Notre Dame 17 to 12 and the Irish lead 5 to 4 in the Big East regular season series. These teams have met twice in the Big East tournament and the Cards have won both of those contest.

Notre Dame might be a little less talented than some Big East teams, but its experienced roster and efficient offense is enough to win big games and be very competitive. Notre Dame returns all five starters for one of the few times in Mike Brey’s 12-year tenure and one of the most talented recruiting classes. Notre Dame’s current senior class needs only three victories to become the program’s all-time winningest class. There is depth, there is talent, there is plenty of drive and plenty of determination. When it comes to taking care of the ball and sharing the ball there isn’t many teams that do it better than this Irish squad. They are currently ranked 1st in the Big East in assist averaging 16.1 per game. And they are ranked 3rd nationally in assist averaging 17.6 per game. The Irish rank 1st in the Big East and 1st nationally in assist/turnover ratio at 1.4 and 1.58. They are also a very good defensive rebounding team ranked 5th in the Big East averaging 23.8 per game. Brey always has a group of guys that can shoot the ball really well and this team can score from anywhere on the court. They are 3rd in the Big East shooting 44.3% from the field and 3rd shooting 36.1% from the three-point line.
Notre Dame ranks nationally 87th averaging 71.2 points per game, 96th grabbing 36.5 rebounds per game and 24th shooting 47.3% from the field per game. They have a current RPI of 44 and are in 4th place in the Big East. Kenpom has their adj efficiency on offense at 114.8 ranked 13th and their adj efficiency on defense at 95.6 ranked 88th. He has them ranked 32 overall.

Coach Mike Brey: “We’ve gone from survival mode to thriving,” “Now the next step is to thrive deeper in New York City and in the NCAA tournament. We’ve been right there knocking on the door, Now it’s time to join the party.”

The Fighting Irish Players:

-Projected Starters

Jack Cooley SR (13.8 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 0.8 apg) 6-9 F is considered the doppelganger of former Irish All-American Luke Harangody. He has became a low-post force this season. In Big East play, he is 2nd in rebounding at 10.2 per game and offensive rebounds per game at 3.6. He is 3rd in field-goal percentage shooting 55.3%. He has scored in double-figures in 27 of the 30 games this season. He is averaging 1 blocked shot per game this season. He shoots 50% from the 3 point line and 68.5% from the free-throw line averaging 30 minutes of play.

Tom Knight SR (4.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 0.7 apg) 6-10 F The left-hander can do a handful of tasks really well rebound, defend and screen. He has become a more consist player this season as well. He shoots 52.7% from the field and 63.6% from the free-throw line averaging 16.7 minutes per game.

Eric Atkins JR (11.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 6.0 apg) 6-2 G He is one of the top guards in the league and is 4th in the Big East in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.1. He’s 7th in the Big East with a 5.1 assist-per-game average this season. He has four double-doubles this season and has dished out 10 or more assists in a game five times this season. He is shooting 45.5% from the field, 43.1% from the three point line and 64.1% from the free-throw line averaging 38.4 minutes per game.

Jerian Grant JR (13.5 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 5.6 apg) 6-5 G is a really confident player that will hit big shots in key moments, and knows how to get the ball to his teammates in scoring position. He has scored in double-figures in 25 Big East games this season, including a current stretch of four straight double-digit efforts. He is averaging 13.5 points per game in league play and his 5.6 assist-per-game average in Big East contests is fourth in the conference. He is shooting 42.7% from the field, 36.4% from the three point line and 72.6% from the free-throw line averaging 36.4 minutes per game.

Pat Connaughton SOPH (8.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 0.4 blkpg) 6-5 G/F is a player with a lot of versatility. He’ll score, pass, guard, take a charge and rebound. He also understands what it’s like to be under the brightest of lights. He has has dished out 69 assists this season and has an assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.06. He is shooting 42% from the field, 32.5% from the three point line and 74.4% from the free-throw line averaging 31.8 minutes a game.

-Bench

Garrick Sherman JR (6.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 0.3 apg) 6-10 C is a transfer from Michigan State that will provide back up to Cooley. He had his breakout game last time against Louisville when he had 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting. This guy is a pretty good weapon for Brey to bring off the Bench for some inside scoring. He is shooting 53.9% from the field and 65.9% from the free-throw line averaging 14.7 minutes per game.

Zach Auguste FR (4.1 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 0.2 apg) 6-10 F is a freshman that has come in and played the part for Notre Dame like Harrell has played for Louisville. He gives them length and a Big East body. He comes off the bench and gives them solid minutes. He is shooting 54.8% from the field and 64% from the free-throw line averaging 10.4 minutes per game.

Cameron Biedscheid FR (6.8 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 1.0 apg) 6-7 F scored on a layup with 1:19 left to seal the 104-101 win the last time these teams played but he won’t be available on Saturday for the Irish. He got ejected in the last game after getting into a fight and will have to serve a one game suspension.

Austin Burgett FR (0.4 ppg, 0.5 rpg, 0.0 apg) 6-9 F will probably see more minutes in the game this Saturday due to the suspension of Biedscheid. He is a first year player with a real feel for the game, handles the ball extremely well for a player with his size and plays like a point forward. He is a strong perimeter shooter and a very skilled/athletic player with a great understanding of the game. He has good rebounding skills to go along with strong shooting abilities.

The Cards thrive on turnovers and forcing the other team to play faster than they typically do. It is not easy to do that to this Irish team. The Irish aren’t a great defensive team and they aren’t great on the offensive glass. I do think we can have the advantage and expose these areas. The Cards have better players at every position on the court. We need to take care of the ball, take good shots, and take advantage of our big guys in the paint. I do think Russ and Peyton will also play a big role if we are to get this win. They must play under control and stay on the floor. Look for Wayne Blackshear to have a big game in this one and his outside shooting will be key. I also think Hancock’s basketball intelligence will be more of an asset in this game than it has all season. I do think this Notre Dame team will struggle to make up for Biedscheids absence and that will make them more vulnerable. Their bench was already short to begin with.

There will be lots of emotion in the KFC Yum Center this Saturday. I just hope that doesn’t affect the players especially Peyton and Gorgui. The implications of this game are very big for both teams heading into the post season next weekend. I think our guys are playing the best basketball in the country and they are ready for anything. This game is just gonna be a tune-up for the final run. I look for this game to be over well before the final horn. No OT this time folks.

RICK GETS 300th IN FINAL BIG EAST BIG MONDAY BEATDOWN OF THE BEARCATS

Tonight was the last time that the current Big East will have a Big Monday match-up on ESPN. The Cards would make the most of the finally as they looked very sharp in the dismantling of the Bearcats beating them 67-51. The Cards now lead the all-time series 55 to 43 and 5 to 4 in the Big East. Coach Pitino got his 300th win and the Cards have now won nine out of ten and six games straight. Also with the win tonight the Cards have secured a double-bye in next weeks Big East Tournament.

Coach Pitino to the Crowd after 300: “I can’t think of any place outside of heaven that I would want to spend 300 wins with than all of you people.”

The Cards would give coach Pitino his 300th win in style as they were as sharp as I’ve seen them all season. They were pressing, passing, scoring and running up and down the floor. This is a Louisville team that continues to guard people and continues to improve their offensive efficiency. Our Cards came into this game forcing 18.7 turnovers per game good for second best in the nation, third in the nation in turnover margin 6.1 and also third in the nation in steals per game 10.8. Tonight they forced the Bearcats into 21 turnovers and had 12 steals. They had held their last five opponents to an average of just 54 points per game on a combined 35.5 percent shooting from the floor. Tonight they held the Bearcats to 51 points and 35.3% from the field. The offense is vastly improved as 3 players scored in double figures tonight and 9 players made it into the scoring column. With 1 game left in the regular season the Cardinals have outscored their league opponents by 0.16 points per possession, tops in the Big East. They are currently ranked 1st in the Big East in scoring margin at +11 and 3rd in the Big East in scoring offense at 70.2 per game. The Cards looked really impressive in the transition game tonight and probably had one of the better plays of the season as you can see in the video below.

The player of the game was Gorgui as he had another impressive stat line for this game with 11 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist and 1 block. He is in post season form not only guarding the basket but also making some very impressive offensive moves. He is currently ranked first in the Big East in rebounding and 16th in the nation. We learned in the post game press conference tonight that Gorgui will participate in the Senior Day ceremonies this weekend and will probably make the move to the NBA next season. He will not sign an agent but coach Pitino says that he will encourage him to go if he is a 1st round pick. Draft Express has him being the 28th pick in the first round to the Thunder. Really tough to think about Dieng not being around next year as he is one of my favorites ever.
Russ had another awesome performance scoring 18 points but the most impressive thing about him is the way he is playing more under control and is getting his teammates involved more often. He has become more efficient from the field and has become much more efficient finishing around the rim. Smith is making 64% of his shot attempts within a foot or so of the basket, an increase from the 53% he made a year ago. And his offensive rating has been boosted to 109. He is going to be a very effective weapon as we head down the stretch. After this game he moved into 61st all-time in points as a Card.
Peyton had a very good game tonight and he also looks like the post season player he was last season. He made some strong moves to the basket tonight and was very good at managing the game for the Cards. He finished with 11 points, 4 assist and 2 steals. He only needs 5 more steals to be the all-time leader in that category for the Cards.
I have been extremely impressed with the performance of our bench. Tonight they outscored the Bearcats bench 19 to 6. Montrezl had a really good night with some very impressive hustle plays. On one play he initiated a steal then leaked out for the dunk on the other end of the floor. Stephan also got some extended playing time tonight and grabbed 4 rebounds. Rick Pitino said in his post game that he was the best rebounder on the team. Our X-factors Ware and Hancock continue to impress with their contributions to this team and are starting to be very reliable subs for Siva and Smith. Luke was 2 for 3 from behind the arc tonight with 8 points and Ware scored 5 including a very athletic play he had on a breakaway.

We have almost reached the end of the season Cards fans and we are just a little over a week away from finding out where our Cards will start their march for their 3rd National Title. This team is primed and ready as they are really starting to hit their stride. This is nothing new to Cardinal fans as our basketball team is 42-18 in the last 9 years around this time. Next up for this team is the payback game on Saturday as the Irish will be coming to town. This will also be the Senior Day ceremonies for Peyton Siva, Gorgui Dieng and Mike Marra.

GAME #30 BEAK BREAKDOWN “The Bearcats”

The word rival is thrown around very loosely in college sports today but on Monday our Louisville Cardinals(24-5, 12-4 Big East) will play a legitimate long time rival when they host the Cincinnati Bearcats(20-9, 8-8 Big East) for the very first time at the KFC Yum center on Monday night. Coach Pitino will be going for his 300th win and the Cards will be looking for their sixth win in a row. Louisville leads the all-time series with UC 54 to 43 and the series is tied in Big East play 4 to 4. The last time these teams met was in the 2012 Big East championship game where the Cards came out victorious in a 50-44 battle.

Mick Cronin has really done a solid job at Cincinnati and they had a terrific run last year in March when they went on a 9-3 run, advanced to the Big East title game and the NCAA Sweet 16. They started out of the gate fast this year winning their first 12 games but have lost six out of ten down the stretch. The Bearcats are about pressuring opponents, turning them over and creating opportunities in the open court or spreading the floor in the half-court, using penetration and 3-point shooting. The problems for this team are a result of shooting and scoring woes, especially from its big guys. And that inability to score efficiently puts a tremendous amount of pressure on their defense to get stop after stop. They are averaging 0.98 points per possession. Their season average is 1.03. In Big East play, Cincinnati is shooting 37.1% from the field ranked 14th and 28.7% from 3-point range ranked 13th. The Bearcats’ defense is outstanding, but it has to be to make up for the team’s inability to score. Their field goal defense is ranked 9th in the Big East holding opponents to 41.6% per game, and their 3 point field goal defense is ranked 3rd holding their opponents to 29.2% per game on average. This team is very athletic and they really go after it on the boards. They are in the top five of every rebounding category in the Big East and are #1 in defensive rebounding.
The Bearcats rank nationally 149th with 68.4 points per game, 6th with 40.6 rebounds per game, 185th with 12.6 assist per game and 298th shooting 40.4% per game average. They are currently in 9th place in the Big East and have an RPI of 50. Kenpom has their adj efficiency on offense at 104.6 ranked 111 and their adj efficiency on defense at 87.5 ranked 12th. He has them ranked 34th overall.

In-conference offense: 3pt-28.7%, 2pt-37.1%, FT-66.4%
In-conference defense: Turnovers- 11.4pg, Steals-5.1pg, Blocks-5.5 pg

Coach Mick Cronin: “Defense is engrained in our DNA,” “For us, we’re trying to create turnovers and extend our defense more consistently.”
“We’re such a defensive-minded team. For us, playing fast means taking the ball off of opponents with more steals, turnovers, deflections and bad passes. When we went through the process of building a program up and learning how to win, defense was the constant.”

The Bearcat Players:

-Projected Starters

Titus Rubles JR (6.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2.0 apg) 6-7 F Cincy is his fourth stop in as many seasons. He is tough, athletic and can defend a variety of positions. He hasn’t been good at all from the field, which hurts his overall numbers. The big key for Rubles has been getting to the line. He shoots 33.1% from the field, 10.3% from the 3 point line and 65.6% from the free-throw line.

Cheikh Mbodj SR (5.0 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 0.2 apg) 6-10 C has proven this season that he can clear the boards and block a bunch of shots. He ranks 3rd in the Big East in blocked shots averaging 2.4 per game. He’s not really an offensive threat and gets most of his points off of offensive rebound put backs. He shoots 46.8% from the field and 65.7% from the free-throw line.

Cashmere Wright SR (12.6 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 3.3 apg) 6-0 G He hasn’t been the same player since he sprained his right knee at DePaul on Jan. 15 and his shooting percentages have gone south. He has played through the pain and is one of two primary scoring threats for this team. And he is also a very good defensive player. He is the all-time steals leader for UC. He is shooting 38.5% from the field, 34.3% from the 3 point line and 81.9% from the free-throw line which ranks 4th in the Big East.

Sean Kilpatrick JR (17.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.9 apg) 6-4 G has emerged as one of the Big East’s top scoring guards and is the leader of this Bearcat squad. He has become very consistent player and can score from long range or drive to the basket. He along with Wright is the second primary scoring threat for this team. He ranks 6th in the Big East in scoring, and 3rd in 3 point shots made at 2.6 per game. He shoots 40.9% from the field, 32.5% from the 3 point line and 73.1% from the free-throw line.

JaQuon Parker SR (11.0 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.6 apg) 6-3 G is a driven wing who can do just about anything necessary in a winning cause. Parker rebounds extremely well for his size, can shoot from the outside and according to Cronin doesn’t care what is asked of him; he’ll do it. He ranks 15th in the Big East in offensive rebounds with 1.9 per game. He shoots 41.4% from the field, 40.5% from the 3 point line and 52.3% from the free-throw line.

-Bench

Ge’Lawn Guyn SOPH (2.5 ppg, 0.9 rpg, 0.5 apg) 6-2 G is not really a big threat scoring wise and is usually called on to hound the opposing teams point guard. He is a very solid on the ball defender. He shoots 34.3% from the field, 25.7% from the 3 point line and 83.3% from the free-throw line.

Jermaine Sanders SOPH (3.4 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 0.8 apg) 6-5 F has been described as a player with a lot of potential. He can play inside or outside, mainly outside. He is a lefty and has a pretty good jump shot. He does struggle a bit from the charity stripe and is not a very good rebounder. He shoots 40.2% from the field, 30% from the 3 point line and 53.3% from the free-throw line.

Shaquille Thomas FR (2.8 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 0.5 apg) 6-7 F can beat his man off the dribble and score at the basket. He’s not all that fundamentally sound, but he’s a high flier who plays above the rim and can be an effective passer. He has good versatility. He is also a good defensive player. He shoots 39.2% from the field, 37.5% from the 3 point line and 57.1% from the free-throw line.

David Nyarsuk JR (2.9 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 0.2 apg) 7-1 C is the tallest player to ever play for the Bearcats. He gives them size and scoring inside. He does struggle to stay on the floor do to his foul trouble. He shoots 59.4% from the field and 53.3% from the free-throw line.

The Bearcats are a very similar team to the Cards the way they play on the defensive end of the floor. This is to be expected as Cronin is a Rick Pitino disciple. But they do struggle on the offensive end of the floor. I look for the Cards to focus their defense keying on Wright and Kilpatrick because the Bearcats have no other serious scoring threats. Their passing is also not very good and their bigs can’t finish around the rim so there’s no need to help off the guards. They are also very poor shooters as a team from the free-throw line.

Gorgui and Chane should have huge days in the lane as they really are on a different level compared to the Bearcat bigs. It will be fun to watch Russ and Peyton go toe-to-toe with their guard duo but I would give the edge to the Cards here as well.

These teams are going in different directions as the Bearcats are really struggling right now and the Cards are playing their best basketball of the season. We have the advantage at every position on the court including our bench play. I’m looking forward to watching these old rivals go at it for the first time ever in the Yum Center but I really don’t expect it to be much of a game.
